Cataract Surgery - Gaining Back Your Clear Vision

Unfortunately, cataracts do not go away on their own and there is currently no medical cure for cataracts. The good news is that cataract surgery is a very common, safe, and highly effective procedure to restore visual clarity. But surgery isn’t always the best option. It is possible - and sometimes even recommended - that if your cataracts are not significantly affecting your daily life then you may not need to undergo surgery right away. Is it time for you to consider cataract surgery?

Being properly evaluated by your cataract surgeon is the only way to determine what solution, if any, is best for you.

There are two types of cataract surgery:

  • Traditional cataract surgery - Is when your cataract surgeon uses a blade and other manual instruments to gain access to the lens.
  • Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery - Is when your cataract surgeon uses a laser to gain access to the lens and automate the procedure.

Replacing Your Cloudy Lens

Once your dysfunctional lens has been removed, it will need to be replaced with an artificial lens called an Intraocular Lens (IOL). There are multiple options to select from, which will be based on your comprehensive evaluation, lifestyle, anatomy of your eye and the financial investment you are willing to make. There are multiple types of IOLs:

  • Monofocal IOLs - provide vision at one distance only, you will still need glasses for some tasks.
  • Advanced IOLs
    • Multifocal - Provide clearer vision at most distances (near and far); most patients will not require glasses after surgery.
    • Toric - Provide correction of astigmatism for clearer vision after surgery and reduce dependency on glasses.
    • Extended Depth of Focus - Provide a continuous range of vision from arm's length to distance. Some patients will require glasses for detailed near vision.

Only after a thorough cataract evaluation with our cataract surgeon, Dr. Nunnery, will you be able to make appropriate decisions as to what type of cataract surgery and lens implant will be appropriate to meet your lifestyle needs.
