Cataracts & Intraocular Lens (IOL) FAQ

These are brand names of intraocular lens implants used as part of lens replacement surgery, otherwise known as cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. These implants are designed to provide a combination of distance and near vision in each eye, especially when working together. Each brand has some advantages, some disadvantages and they work on different principles. If your evaluation or age indicates you may have a cataract, lens replacement surgery may be the procedure of choice for you and will be discussed, if appropriate.

Cataract surgery typically only takes 10-15 minutes per eye! Cataract surgery is performed one eye at a time. Approximately 2 weeks after your first eye is completed, you will return to have the second eye completed.

Thanks to numbing drops that are instilled in your eye and a light sedative, our patients tell us that cataract surgery by Dr. Nunnery does not hurt. Sometimes the numbing drops do have a mild stinging sensation but nothing that you have not experienced before at your annual eye exams. Additionally, we will be with you every step of the way telling you what to expect, so there will be no surprises.

• After your procedure, we’ll have you spend a few minutes in the recovery room.
• Make sure you arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery (your safety is always our primary concern!).
• You will then be able to rest at home for the remainder of the day.
• We’ll tape a protective eye shield to wear while you sleep for a week or two, so you don’t accidentally bump or rub your eye during the healing process, and remind you to re-start your eye drops 3-4 hours after the procedure.

Most of Dr. Nunnery’s patients see significant improvement by the very next day. However, it can take a few weeks for the remainder of the healing to occur, and it may take 1-3 months for your vision to fully stabilize. Don’t worry if your vision is slightly blurry at first or if your eyes are mildly irritated – this is normal for most people. We will prescribe eye drops to minimize discomfort. However, if for any reason you have any concerns or abnormal discomfort during this time, do not hesitate to call our office. We always have a doctor on call 24/7.
